What am I carrying while hiking?
What am I wearing on the AT?
What are you going to eat?

I already had a Canon S70 7.1Mp camera, which weights 10 ounces (294 grams) including it's proprietary rechargeable battery, requiring me to carry the charger, which is another 3 oz (90 grams). I'm sure I'd have to carry an extra battery, 1 oz (43 grams). Bottom line, I needed something lighter and a camera that uses readily available AA batteries. I chose the Nikon Coolpix L14 which was just over half the weight of the Canon S70.
Also included is a mini-tripod that can wrap itself around a tree branch, post or whatever I can find to take some self-portraits. To transfer the photographs, where I can get them online, I picked a small SD card reader rather than going with the cable Nikon provides with the camera. It's small, more compact and lighter and one less messy cable to deal with.

Nikon L14 Camera Review
I kept this in my right pants pocket for most of the hike and undoubtedly because of that it began to have problems retracting the lens due to dust in the gear mechanism. Being the techie I am, I tried to disassemble and clean it but the lens and gear mechanism are sealed. The cost to have Nikon fix it is more than I paid for it.
The tri-pod wasn't used as much as I thought I would, mainly because I had someone to take the photos. I really only needed to replace the batteries once and that is after a lot of reviewing of the days photos once I got to camp. The USB Card reader worked great, except a couple of times the computer either didn't have USB or I couldn't plug both the reader and the USB cable to the iPod in at the same time, due to the reader being too fat. This Nikon L14 camera is coming along on the Great Divide with the addition of 12Gb of SD card memory. I don't want to be in the same situation, when I got to Mt Katahdin and not have any memory left. I'm also taking the extra memory, as I would like to do more videos. The Canon S70, with 3Gb is also coming along as backup should the L14 completely die. |
