What am I carrying while hiking?
What am I wearing on the AT?
What are you going to eat?

For lighting, I'll be using the Petzl Tikka XP, requiring 3 AAA batteries, which unfortunately means I won't have any 'multi-use' with the batteries from the camera and iPod. Probably not a dealer break, all things considered. Included also, is a bungie cord, for hanging things to dry, a couple of hooks, should I not find any in the shelter. Safety Pins are to hook the mesh bag (not pictured) on to my pack, for drying. A bag of ear plugs, for those very special nights in a shelter with a bunch of snorers. I broke down a multi-use knife and extracted the only thing of it I'd use - the scissors. That saved a bundle of weight. Also, in bright orange is an waterproof envelope sack for hooking onto my pack. I'll carry paper items, such as maps and journals, protected from the elements. The Sharpie pen is for writing address labels for maildrop boxes, not that I'm planning on too many of those, so it may be discarded.

The Petzl Tikka XP headlamp worked great and only had to replace the batteries twice. I did wish it would only need 2 batteries rather than 3, only because you can only buy 2 or 4 packs and I didn't want to carry an 'extra' battery. I found out quickly the waterproof envelope sack wasn't so waterproof. However, I will be taking it on the Great Divide as it's the perfect size for keeping my maps organised. I went through a bag of ear plugs and handed a few out to other hikers. I highly recommend taking some. The super glue was never used and I only once needed a knife (when I cut a hole in my shoes) which I borrowed from another hiker. |
